CHAPTER 22

5:32 p.m. – July 19, 2036 – Pentagon Detention Area, Alexandria, VA

The interview continued for six hours. Kathy looked fatigued. Trevor reflected on the results. Smith didn’t even acknowledge he time-traveled, even though he was caught in the act. When Kathy asked about the other man Hatcher saw, he smiled and apologized for not knowing what she was talking about. And he still denied knowing anything about Barbara.

They hadn't learned much, but they made progress because Smith was warming up to Kathy. Or at least his demeanor had moved away from the derisive comments he made at the beginning of the interview.

The most interesting thing happened when she asked him about the cut on his cheek. He seemed surprised at the question and replied, 'Some asshole shot me.' It wasn't what he said, though. It was how he said it. Was he surprised by the question? Before he answered her, he looked from her to the window and back again. He’s aware that he knows something we don't.

At the end of the day, Smith told war stories. At first, Trevor thought he was bragging to impress Kathy. Maybe he is. She’s beautiful and sympathetic. Why wouldn’t he want to impress her?

But something else came through to Trevor. There was a consistent pattern of professionalism in Smith’s speech, the way he glossed over details that were likely still classified, but recalled other mission events in detail. And his love for the men under his command was there, too. It occurred to Trevor that Smith was proud of being a SEAL and he wasn’t completely without honor, regardless of the persona he seemed determined to portray. In spite of his bluster and posturing, there was still a US military officer in there somewhere.

Kathy was the picture of patience. She listened and responded to every word Smith said.

Trevor typed on their chat. <Time to call it a day. >

Kathy was listening hard to Smith but glanced down from time to time. This time, the message was only thirty seconds old before she caught it.

As he brought the latest tale to a close, Kathy stretched and yawned. She was tired, and she made a show of it so he wouldn't think she was getting bored.

Rising, she said to Smith, “Well, that’s enough for now. Please don't go anywhere. I'd like to talk to you again. But it's getting late and I have a date.” She smiled at him and started for the door.

Trevor could see the tenseness in her posture. Smith won’t miss that.

Smith called after her. “Where are you going on your date this fine Sunday evening?”

She looked back at him and bit her lip, but said nothing. Smith smiled at her.

Before she left the room, Smith had one last thing to say.

“Hey, how's General Drake? Tell him I said hello, would you?”

She looked back at him and opened her mouth to speak but stopped.

Smith was not looking at Kathy. He was staring at the observation window.

“I will,” Kathy said.

Smith didn’t respond. He put his hands together on the table and stared at them.
